May 18, 2026 · By Alex Smith

Ukraine launched major drone strikes on Moscow region targeting weapons electronics and oil infrastructure, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed Kyiv is outperforming Russia on the battlefield. Full Ukraine war update for day 1,545.

Ukraine War Briefing: The Drones That Bombarded Moscow Region

Kyiv says an electronics factory producing weapon components and a major oil pumping station were among the targets during one of Ukraine’s largest long-range drone attacks on Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also claimed Ukraine is now outperforming Russia in battlefield activity. Here’s what happened on day 1,545 of the war.

Ukraine Reveals Advanced Drone Arsenal Used Against Moscow Region

Ukraine’s armed forces disclosed several aerial systems used during the weekend assault on the Moscow region, including the RS-1 “Bars” jet-powered UAV, the Firepoint FP-1 winged drone, and a newly revealed drone identified as the Bars-SM Gladiator.

Ukraine’s SBU security service confirmed strikes on the Angstrom electronics plant in Zelenograd, near Moscow. According to Kyiv, the facility manufactures microelectronics, radio systems, optics, and robotics used in high-precision Russian weapons systems.

The SBU also claimed responsibility for hitting the Solnechnogorskaya pumping station, a key component of the oil pipeline network surrounding Moscow that helps transport and store gasoline and diesel fuel for the Russian military.

Ukraine Says Strikes Weaken Russia’s War Capability

The SBU stated that the attacks were designed to reduce Russia’s ability to continue military operations. Russian authorities reported at least four deaths and more than a dozen injuries following the attacks. Moscow claimed many incidents were caused by “drone debris,” a term frequently used by Russian officials to suggest air defence systems intercepted incoming drones.

Russia’s defence ministry said more than 3,100 Ukrainian drones were allegedly shot down over the past week, highlighting the scale of the aerial campaign.

AFP Journalists Witness Ukraine’s Long-Range Drone Launches

Journalists from Agence France-Presse were reportedly granted access to a secret Ukrainian launch site where long-range drones were prepared for strikes deep inside Russian territory.

Witnesses described aircraft-style drones launching into the night sky with flames and sparks trailing behind rocket boosters during what became one of the heaviest Ukrainian bombardments of Russia since the conflict began.

Zelenskyy Claims Ukraine Gaining Momentum on Battlefield

In his nightly address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the attacks on Moscow, calling them “entirely justified.”

Zelenskyy also claimed Ukrainian combat operations exceeded Russian battlefield activity on Sunday, calling it a major shift in frontline momentum.

According to Kyiv, Ukrainian forces also struck:

  • Russian command posts in the Donetsk region
  • UAV control centers in Kharkiv, Kherson, and Donetsk regions
  • Enemy troop concentrations in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kursk, and Novoekonomichesky areas

Russia Continues Overnight Missile and Drone Attacks on Ukraine

Russia launched fresh overnight attacks on Ukrainian cities including Odesa and Dnipro.

In Odesa, drones struck residential buildings, a school, and a kindergarten, injuring an 11-year-old boy and a 59-year-old man, according to local officials.

In Dnipro, missile strikes injured three civilians. Additional attacks in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions reportedly wounded civilians and killed at least one man after explosives were dropped on a home by a drone.

Nato Border Tensions Rise After Drone Incidents

Lithuanian authorities reported discovering a suspected Ukrainian military drone that crashed near the village of Samane, close to the Latvian and Belarusian borders. Officials stated the drone carried no explosives and had not been detected entering Lithuanian airspace.

Separately, Latvia issued a drone alert near its border with Russia, prompting NATO fighter aircraft to respond after a drone briefly entered Latvian territory.

Since March, multiple Ukrainian drones have reportedly strayed into NATO member states including Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Kyiv says Russian electronic warfare systems likely diverted the drones off course.

Ukraine Drone Commander Defends Deep Strikes Inside Russia

Ukraine’s drone forces commander, Robert Brovdi, known by the callsign “Madyar,” defended Ukraine’s long-range attacks inside Russia.

He stated that infrastructure funding Russia’s war effort has become a legitimate military target “in any part of the territory of the occupying country,” including Siberia and the Urals.

The comments came shortly before Ukraine launched a wave of more than 600 drones toward Russian territory over the weekend.
