Russian Drone Attacks Strike Civilian Ships Near Ukraine’s Black Sea Coast

May 18, 2026 · By Alex Smith

Russia launched one of its largest overnight aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent weeks, firing hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles across the country. Ukrainian officials said the attacks wounded more than 30 people and damaged civilian infrastructure, including two cargo ships navigating the Black Sea near Ukraine’s southern coast.

The strikes focused heavily on the Odesa region, a critical hub for Ukraine’s maritime exports and grain trade. Authorities confirmed that two civilian vessels approaching Ukrainian ports were hit during the attack, raising fresh concerns about the safety of international shipping routes in the Black Sea.

According to Ukraine’s seaports administration, the vessels were sailing under the flags of the Marshall Islands and Guinea-Bissau when they were targeted. One of the ships, identified as the KSL Deyang, was described by the Ukrainian navy as a Chinese-owned cargo vessel operated by a Chinese crew.

Photos released by Ukrainian officials showed visible burn damage along one side of the ship after the drone strike. Despite the attack, officials said the vessel avoided catastrophic damage and remained afloat.

Chinese-Owned Cargo Ship Damaged

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that a Russian drone struck a vessel owned by a Chinese company during the overnight assault. The incident occurred as the ship was reportedly approaching Ukraine’s Pivdennyi port in the Odesa region to load iron ore concentrate.

Sources familiar with the situation said the cargo ship was empty at the time of the strike. Crew members quickly extinguished a fire that broke out onboard following the explosion. No deaths or serious injuries were reported among the crew.

The attack marks another escalation in the ongoing battle over control and security in the Black Sea, where civilian shipping routes have repeatedly faced threats since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than four years ago.

Ports and Maritime Routes Under Constant Threat

Since the beginning of the war, Russia has frequently targeted Ukrainian ports, grain terminals, and maritime infrastructure. These facilities are essential for Ukraine’s wartime economy and global agricultural exports.

International shipping companies have remained cautious about operating near Ukrainian waters due to the increasing risk of missile and drone attacks. The latest strikes once again highlighted the vulnerability of civilian vessels traveling through the region.

Ukraine has worked to maintain export operations despite repeated attacks on coastal infrastructure. Black Sea ports play a major role in transporting grain, iron ore, and other products to international markets.

Hundreds of Drones and Missiles Launched

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched approximately 546 drones and 22 missiles during the overnight attack. Air defense systems intercepted the majority of the drones, although several missiles successfully reached their targets.

The industrial city of Dnipro was among the hardest-hit locations. Regional officials said missiles, drones, artillery, and aerial bombs struck multiple districts overnight.

Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the regional administration, said at least 26 people were wounded in the attacks across the Dnipro region. Images shared online showed shattered apartment windows, damaged buildings, and emergency crews responding to fires caused by the strikes.

Other regions across Ukraine also reported explosions and air raid alerts throughout the night as Russia intensified its aerial campaign.

Escalation in Drone Warfare

The latest wave of attacks came shortly after both Russia and Ukraine exchanged some of their most intense drone strikes in months. Ukrainian officials have increasingly relied on long-range drones to target military and industrial sites inside Russia, while Moscow continues large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

President Zelensky has repeatedly called on Western allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, warning that Russia continues to expand its use of drones and precision missiles.

Military analysts say the Black Sea remains a strategically important battleground because of its role in trade, energy exports, and military logistics. Continued attacks on civilian shipping could further disrupt regional stability and international commerce.

As rescue operations and damage assessments continued Monday, Ukrainian authorities warned that the threat of further Russian aerial attacks remained high across the country.
